My Approach
I am an experiecned BACP accredited therapist. I use the relational approach combining Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Combing both approaches looks at empathy, acceptance and understanding which helps improve thought patterns and self-concept to manage maladaptive behaviours. I offer short (6-8 sessions) and long term counselling (12+/open-ended).
I integrate the Person-Centred approach, helping clients feel safe to move towards self-acceptance. I don’t diagnose clients they are the experts on themselves. My approach is to empower that inner unconscious knowledge and predominantly self-direct the sessions. This supports autonomy and encourages clients to grow accordingly with their qualities. My aim is to be present and available in the room with clients.
I adopt CBT helping individuals become their own therapist. Taking this approach, I encourage exercises to complete outside the session, including keeping a diary of their thoughts and feelings; developing coping mechanisms allowing clients to alter their own thinking, behaviour and emotions. Helping clients manage issues by recognising how their thoughts effects their feelings and behaviours.
I connect with clients relationally. Counselling is about contemplating change and how to make changes that matter to the client. I believe the relationship is the vehicle for that change. I attune to my client’s frame of reference, its important they feel understood. I try understand my client’s inner world, enabling clients to experience feelings that they may not have acknowledged previously. I assist clients in their exploration, recalling and organising information.
